New motor for 7.7

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jim Mc @ 8:55 am

The San Juan 7.7 (big blue one) has a new motor on it. It’s a 9.9 Suzuki that runs on straight gas. So now all but the Ranger 20 (little blue one) run on straight gas.

The start up is pretty simple, pull the choke, align the arrow on the throttle with the funny little symbol on the handle and push the green start button. Yes this one has electric start. After it starts push the choke in and turn the throttle down. It should start up quickly.

To keep the battery topped off run the motor for about 5-10 minutes after you start it. The motor charges the battery. If the battery dies then you still can pull start it.

The shift lever is in the front on the starboard side of the motor.

Big Boat Anti-Bird Measures

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jim Mc @ 8:46 am

As you might have noticed birds really like our big boats, unfortunately they leave lots of deposits behind. We have added some bird scaring stuff to the boats to ward them off, so far it appears to work. To keep the birds from getting use to them we’ll move or change the configuration over time.

One measure is what is called “Terror Eyes” ballons, the eyes look like raptor eyes. They are hoisted up above the boom by either a flag or spinnaker line. When you use the boat just lower the ballon and then replace it when you put it away.

The second measure is the use of mylar tape. The tape has Velcro on it that allows it to be easily removed before sailing. Again just put it back when you put the boat away. Don’t worry too much about putting it back in it’s ‘proper’ location, its not that scientific and it’s good to change locations periodically.

Sailing off the Dock. Sun June 27Th

Filed under: Uncategorized — Joel @ 9:23 am

From the DockMaster for Sunday the 27th
It was a great day of sailing for all. We had 3 newer sailers and one advanced. The winds where great and the 10 knot gusts made it a little bit of challenge. Everyone did a great job.
Happy sailing!

Happy, rainy Father’s Day!

Filed under: Sailing Plans, Uncategorized — MikeM @ 10:57 am

No contacts for a rainy day sail with no wind.  Guess I can’t blame anyone, doesn’t look like fun.  We will hope for better on Tuesday and Thursday.

What weekend works best for you for the Youth Sailing/ El Toro Race Day and are you interested?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Miguel @ 8:51 am

The dates that work for the organizers, since they have the little kids, are the weekends of July 17/ 18th; or  August 21/ 22nd. Sunday is a bit better are flexible on that, with a 10 am as a start time.

For those of you who want to be involved, contact gwenmwelch@earthlink.net and let her know what you prefer.

Again, this will be a kids event, so members, bring your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, or neighbors kids (with their parent’s approval, of course)… We will have some parent/ kid races on the water; if the water is completely flat/ no wind, we are thinking of paddle races with the El Toros or on any sort of Inflatable that you want to bring, if it’s hot out.

Adult racing on the El Toros can be after the kids finish up.

We can bring out the BBQ for burgers, hot dogs, pot luck to share on the dock, during the event.

We will need some volunteers to help with some of the set up of race courses and the like….and I was thinking that it would be great to have a say 30 minute class on sailing basics for kids with no experience.

Okay….let gwenmwelch@earthlink.net know what you think!
